The End of the Line

This has been one of the most exciting times of our lives.

We want to say thank you for your generous response to our recent letter expressing the uncertainty of CreatedHere’s future. We received many notes of support, subscriptions, donations, offers of collaboration, and lots of hugs. Your support gave us a little more time to explore possibilities for CreatedHere’s future.

Unfortunately, after exhausting these avenues, we have come to the difficult conclusion that CreatedHere Magazine is not sustainable. The advent of the digital era has not been kind to art magazines or print publications in general, not to mention the effect of the pandemic on the economy and the arts. We believe there are other projects better suited to supporting artists at this point in time, and so Issue 19, shipping out this week, will be CreatedHere’s last.

All current subscribers will receive a refund by June 1st for any issues we do not fulfill.

Working closely with you, the amazing art community of New Brunswick and beyond, has been the best part of this journey. Your perseverance helped us to persist through many difficult moments and your passion pushed us to create some really cool publications in your honour.

Working with so many exceptional artists, writers, board members, interns, funders, and supporters has made this one of the most exciting times of our lives.

None of this was possible without the financial and in-kind support of funders like the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, artsnb, the Government of Canada, the Investment Readiness Program, the University of New Brunswick, FutureReady NB, Magnet and Working NB, and our many subscribers and advertisers. There is no lack of goodwill in the community, but it is the fiscally responsible decision to end this project and make room for others to thrive in its place. We would like to extend special appreciation to NBCCD for jumping on in 2019 to incubate CreatedHere so it could reach so many in the arts community. Thank you for saying yes to this project and for supporting our vision.

All sales revenue from this point on, and any funds remaining at closure, will be donated to form a CreatedHere scholarship, in perpetuity, for an NBCCD student who demonstrates excellence in arts writing.

Over the coming weeks, we ask for your help to commemorate the high quality, highly visible publication that sired a new level of journalistic professionalism for New Brunswick’s art and culture industry. We are offering back issues at a deep discount until our shop closes on May 27th, to make it more accessible than ever to create your own collection.

While we are very sad to see this particular chapter come to an end, we choose to celebrate the incredible New Brunswick artists whose stories we had the privilege to tell. Since 2015, we have featured hundreds of artists, photographers, craftspeople, writers, and creatives from all over the province, both online and in print. We know these stories will continue to grace your coffee tables, be handed to friends, and inspire ripple effects of creativity.

We have been proud to be caretakers of this idea – the idea of amplifying the reach of New Brunswick artists – and we can’t wait to see where it surfaces next. In fact, it’s all around us now, with organizations like Connexion ARC, Third Space, and ArtsLink NB pursuing exciting arts writing projects of their own. This is the end of CreatedHere but it is not the end of this idea.

New Brunswick artists, you are worthy of great things, and we hope CreatedHere Magazine helped to show you that.

Thank you, and we can’t wait to cross paths again soon!

Sincerely,

The CreatedHere Board of Directors & Publication Team
